Craft News I love the idea of starting the new year off with a meaningful - and educational - craft project. And since I'm partial to embroidery, this Happy New Year Sampler from Nordic Craft caught my eye. I love that the simple lines leave opportunity to work in special new stitches as you learn them. Craftster user Wildanimus improvised this freehand cherry blossom cross-stitch piece. I love how she made the design extend across three embroidery hoops, and the seed bead detail in the middle of each blossom is a lovely touch as well. Every year, Jek's talented husband Jeff makes her a new sock monkey. In past years he's done a Sock Monkey de Willendorf, a Buddha Monkey, and a Sock Monkey de Milo. This year he's done the Saras Sock Vati, representing the Hindu goddess of the arts, Sarasvati. I love this mustache fabric from Sew Bettie. Can you imagine the fun projects that could be created with it? The embroidery-lovin' gal in me also sees some great stitching opportunities here .... Wow, look at these boots from fused plastic bags! From Treehugger: We've talked about plastic bags fusing before as a way to keep polyethylene bags going, and even pointed you to a tutorial to DIY, but so far we hadn't seen the material applied to footwear and in such an elegant way. These boots are the work of Chilean industrial design student Camila Labra, and made mostly of recycled plastic bags. Keep reading to find out about the process, prices and more models. The boots are built by fusing several layers of plastic polyethylene bags together to create a thicker and more resistant material to work with. Their interior is covered with quilted piqué cotton fabric to make them more comfortable and prevent too much heat. According to the designer, the boots are impermeable, flexible, light and non toxic. The line of boots is named Dacca (aka Dhaka) after Bangladesh's capital, one of the most polluted with plastic bags in the world (the bags were banned in that city since 2002). Thanks, Shawn! The heart pendants are created by attaching teacup handles, and the bangles are made by slicing the teacups, creating wearable rings.
