NO MORE BURNING LOVE;
Blue Moon Invitations, Inc. Supports Music Industry by No Longer Offering Favor CD Covers and Labels to Brides
September 22, 2003 - CRANSTON, RI - Blue Moon Invitations, Inc., a couture invitation studio offering an exclusive line of wedding, baby and occasion invitations, announced Monday their decision to no longer offer CD label and cover designs in support of the music industry's battle with copyrights.
"Personalized compilation CDs have become one of the most popular options for affordable wedding favors," stated Blue Moon owner and creative director Dawn Viola. But I don't think most couples realize that burning multiple CDs for distribution to guests - even for personal use - is against the law."
By providing CD covers and labels, I felt that we were possibly contributing to the copyright problems by unintentionally encouraging couples to engage in the illegal act of piracy."
According to the copyright laws, a copy of each song for every CD burned would need to be purchased, which according to Viola, would bring the cost of each seemingly affordable CD close to current CD prices found in stores.
"Individuals are not permitted to make copies of their copyrighted recordings and distribute them to others without permission from the copyright owner. Whether or not you do it for free or for profit is irrelevant; the impact on the copyright owner is the same, they do not have the ability to sell their artistic work to others because they have received an unauthorized free copy," stated Matt Oppenheim, senior vice president of business and legal affairs for the Recording Industry Association of America.
The Audio Home Recording Act permits individuals who are using special Digital Audio Recording Devices (such as Mini-Disc Players or Digital Audio Tape Recorders) to make limited copies for their 'noncommercial' personal use. It does not permit individuals to make copies on other digital devices for distribution to friends or other people."
While Blue Moon will no longer create covers and labels for the compilation CDs, they will continue to offer the service, by request, for other uses.
"We will definitely provide CD covers and labels for other uses that are within the law," stated Viola.
In the past, we have created original artwork for photo CDs in which couples wanted to send photos of their new baby to relatives. The couples had taken all of the photos themselves, burned the CDs and we created a very sweet cover and matching label. In addition, we've created CD covers and labels for various corporate needs and situations."
Viola envisions other viable companies in the industry will follow suit, "I encourage other invitation companies and wedding professionals in the industry to follow our lead and discontinue the creation and sales of CD covers and CD label designs for personal compilation favors. It's just good business ethics, plain and simple."
